In 1900, Robert Butchart, John M. Kilbourn, George S. Kilbourn, Francis H. Kilbourn, Horace B. Smith and William Bravender incorporated the Lakefield Portland Cement Company at Lakefield, Ontario with the intention of supplying Portland cement for the construction of  the Trent-Severn Waterway.
